Seattle Sound Girls // Print for Auction

March 14, 2016

Seattle Sound Girls is a non-profit offering classes to teenage girls, teaching them the ropes of making, recording and producing music in a studio. This cause is important to me because I've been touring for many years and have had the good fortune of touring with so many talented, intelligent women. Simply, I want there to be more women on tour. I'm tired of the imbalance in the music industry - the "brodeo", so to speak. If I were a musician, I'd strive to find a female perspective in the studio and hope that I wouldn't have to look far to find one. It's a valuable perspective and it requires mentorship from those of us with experience. It requires resources that can be put towards educating a new generation of musicians, producers, engineers and road crew.

On April 15th, Seattle Sound Girls is having a fundraising show to expand their curriculum and I donated a print of mine to be auctioned off. It's a print of Annie Clark (St. Vincent) & Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), practicing for a rare, one-off set as a benefit for MusiCares (also a great organization). I picked this one because I want there to be more visible collaboration between artists as equals, not necessarily as "male songwriter" and/or "woman in rock". Through art, we can cultivate mutual respect and hopefully, eventually, slough off the qualifiers. We have some work to do, but we're making progress. If you feel drawn to anything I've written here, consider donating and/or coming out to the show. Details are below!
